Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista My new novel begins five years after the end of Enemies Foreign And Domestic, in a much darker America, which is becoming more of a police state following each new act of terrorism. Have there ever been any presidents who have destroyed the Democratic party?
Q. People tell me that George W. Bush destroyed the republican party when he was in office among other things. I don't know that Bush is the worst president we have had but he ranks way up there. However, I have been wondering who the worst democratic presidents in US history might have been and if there have ever been any democratic presidents who have done to the democratic party what Bush has done to the Republican party. Who might be the worst Democratic US president?

A. That would be Jimmy Carter. Truth is that both Carter and Bush had good intentions, but both failed. Some people argue that we should lower taxes all the time. That is a very bad idea, as evidenced by Bush's years in office. His refusal to raise taxes meant that he could not pay for what he did (specifically the Iraq and Afghanistan wars), and he wound up having to borrow the money at extremely high (and exponentially growing) interest rates. That sent the National Debt through the roof (he started his terms in office at $4 trillion, left the office when we had nearly $11 trillion in debt), which in turn devalued the dollar and collapsed the economy.
